Cynthia Thielen on Education

Republican Challenger

Limited opportunities for college dropout vs. college grad

I was raised by a single mother who taught me that a good education was absolutely essential. Thanks to her, I returned to school after I had four children, and received my college and then law degree from the University of Hawaii. I have personally experienced the limited opportunities available to a college dropout compared to a college graduate.

Quality public education is an essential service

It is absolutely essential that Hawaii public schools and our University system improve the quality of student achievement and the number of students completing high school, entering and successfully completing college and university. Support NCLB to make fundamental changes in schooling

The Democratic position on education issues can be summed up in two words: more money. While I agree that the federal government should make more resources available, those resources should come with the understanding that schools will not use the extra money to pursue business as usual, feeding the education bureaucracy while continuing to starve the classroom teacher. The No Child Left Behind Act is an important part of requiring our schools to make fundamental changes in the way they do business.

Ensure an excellent, free education to all children

As Senator, I will advocate for three primary areas:
  1. Increase classroom teacher training. These programs cannot be “one-size-fits-all,” and must recognize the different challenges faced by schools with different income levels, cultural values, and community/geographic resources.
  2. We must work constantly to improve NCLB including the flexibility to recognize steady improvement, even if we do not reach the numerical goal for a specific year, and to relieve schools from burdensome red tape when they demonstrate regularly increasing achievement.
  3. Ensuring an excellent, free education to all children in the US is the most essential, fundamental function of our government. Quality education creates an educated citizenry, permits individuals to achieve a fulfilling life, secures our national economic future, and provides limitless opportunities for our nation.
